Lyrics:

Now the soil takes your breath
Nothing left
Just bones and empty roads
And a want for something more
Open door
But careful not to ask

And holding fast

Now sorrow burns around you
Anger, fear and death surround you
So afraid
Helpless
Where is the void you’re after?
Emptiness, the final chapter
So afraid
Helpless hope

To the hollow hands of fate
No escape
No panic, no reprieve
And the faith it was too blind
Too unkind
But faithful in the wholeness of

The hole itself

(Chorus)

Let go
Follow

(Chorus 2x)

Behind the Song:
‘I believe there comes a time in everyone’s life, sometimes on multiple occasions, when they experience the overwhelming urge to call out to God. More often than not, this comes in a time of need, a time of confusion or depression… a time when life has stopped making sense. In hindsight, the natural reaction is usually to consider these moments as a lapse of blind desperation. If we can’t trust in the clarity of these crucial moments, we’re fooling ourselves. This desire is not some learned ideology, but an inherent response of humankind. We feel it because it is the only final and true solution.’ – Ryan Clark

I get what Mr. Clark is saying, but that is not exactly where my brain went when reading the lyrics before reading the comments! ?? It’s like the reaction of people to turn to prayer or God in the aftermath of a crisis, but then they go back to same ol’ same ol’ once the crisis is pushed into the back of their minds. If you can’t trust the clarity that comes during a crisis, then we are fooling ourselves by returning to our habits that caused the crisis instead of trusting the God you instinctively reached out.

The lyrics themselves seem to be the voice inside the head of a person who can’t trust God…hollow hopelessness. I like the line “But faithful in the wholeness of the hole itself”. It is an irrational faithfulness in the wrong thing…the place where they end up is hollow with no escape. The helpless hope is not a good thing. Our God is full of help, reprieve, hope!
